Protest movements create change by building narrative power, generating public support that pressures leaders from the ground up, and fundamentally changing societal conditions.
Disruption is critical. Interrupting business-as-usual forces the media to pay attention and members of the public to pick a side. Multiple studies have found disruptive protest benefits the entire movement, whereas those without a disruptive element are often ignored.
