We are a funding intermediary that supports grassroots climate groups that utilize nonviolent disruption as part of their campaigning. That means we raise money for, and make grants to activist groups as a critical piece of infrastructure for the climate movement. Philanthropy as a sector is not well-equipped to support protest groups, and activists are not experienced fundraisers. We act as a bridge between philanthropists, big and small, and on-the-ground climate activists.
No. Grassroots movements are powered by passionate volunteers. Many of our grantees are groups of volunteers who use the funding to hire a few full-time people who can coordinate and train much larger groups of volunteers. So while grantees may use our funds to recruit, train, or coordinate, people who attend climate protests or take part in direct action do so as volunteers.
Climate Emergency raises approximately $5 million USD each year, granting about $4 million and spending about $1 million a year on our operations. In other words, we are a lean, green grant-making machine!
We encourage giving to groups directly when possible - especially in cases where the group is equipped to accept funds without a fiscal sponsor and might already have tax status. That said, there are circumstances where funders would prefer to go through an intermediary like Climate Emergency Fund rather than support the group directly. We offer a safe, legal, tax-deductible way to do so.
That said, while we can move funding to disruptive, nonviolent climate groups that already exist, our specialty is to function more like a venture philanthropy with early stage funding to the movement, sometimes before a group even exists. New movements bring excitement and momentum that catalyze change in a way older, more established groups cannot, and the role we play to vet new groups and evaluate likelihood for success makes us a unique and critical piece of movement infrastructure unlike any other group funding the climate movement.
Climate Emergency Fund provides a safe, legal, and tax deductible way to support the grassroots climate movement.
Our movement-oriented legal team provides layers of protection to Climate Emergency Fund by grant agreements to ensure that our funds support only legal 501(c)(3) appropriate activities.
We fund activities such as recruitment, training, press support, education, art supplies, and capacity-building - not protest itself. Grantees are required to report back on all money spent, ensuring that funds were only spent on legal and eligible activities.
Please get in touch for more information about the layers of protection that our donors enjoy.
Those based outside the U.S. can use our regular giving portal linked at the top of this page.
