New York Communities for Change Helps Secure Statewide Gas Ban in New York

To tackle the climate emergency, we need to stop expanding fossil fuel infrastructure, including heating and cooking systems based on fossil gas within buildings. Not only do fossil gas emissions from buildings make up a large share of cities’ carbon footprints, they also cause extremely harmful indoor air pollution.

In May 2023, Climate Emergency Fund Grantee New York Communities for Change (NYCC) helped secure the biggest victory against gas infrastructure in US history, with the New York state government banning gas in new buildings statewide. This win follows NYCC’s gas ban victory in New York City in 2021 and XRDC’s gas ban victory in 2022.

These victories are creating powerful momentum for a nationwide shift away from gas infrastructure within buildings, and away from power based on fossil fuels more broadly. The future is electric, and it is on the way!
